“Doula”
is a Greek word that refers to a woman who supports
another woman during labor. Today, doulas are
well-trained, experienced women who serve to guide
each pregnant women through her unique labor offering
continuous physical and emotional support. The
doula is there not only for the mother but also
for her family and partner providing emotional
and informational support. Doulas are especially
valuable for women planning to labor without a
partner.
What a Doula Does:
Helps with birth planning preferences
Provides information regarding procedures
and hospital policy if choosing a hospital birth
Provides information regarding procedures
and additional support if choosing Homebirth
Provides emotional support and reassurance,
so that you and your family feel safe and secure
Provides physical support to reduce discomfort
and suggests positions and techniques that may
help labor progress
Provides praise and encouragement during this
life changing process
Helps provide your partner with ways to best
support you
Acts as a protector of the labor environment
so that it remains conducive to allowing you
to relax and surrender
Allows you to labor at home as long as desired
if birthing in the hospital and helps increase
the likelihood you can stay at home if you choose
a homebirth
Helps with breastfeeding support and is a
resource for questions involving baby care and
postpartum recovery.
What a Doula Does Not Do:
Does not perform any medical tasks, like taking
blood pressure, checking for dilation or giving
medical advice
Does not make decisions for you

comfort measures during labor as well as a prenatal
massage to prepare you for labor and a postpartum
massage to help you recover more quickly.

24/7 on-call labor availability at 37 weeks
Continuous physical and emotional labor support
for the mother and family until one hour after

1 prenatal massage and 1 postpartum massage
